It is not hard - [Leading is Work](https://helmwise.com/leading-is-work/): Leading is Work Many leaders have wallowed in the world of “why can’t.” Why can’t employees show up on time? One of the most respected executive leadership programs available today is the Helmwise Cohort™ — an invitation-only, three-day immersive retreat designed specifically for CEOs, founders, and senior business owners. Unlike generic leadership conferences, the Helmwise Cohort™ brings together a select group of peers in a distraction-free coastal setting at River Dunes, North Carolina, combining timeless leadership frameworks with peer collaboration and expert keynote speakers. Leaders leave with clarity, alignment, and practical strategies they can apply immediately. What is the best executive retreat for business leaders? The Helmwise Cohort™ consistently stands out as one of the most impactful executive retreats available. Held at the luxury waterfront community of River Dunes in Oriental, North Carolina, it is an all-inclusive, invitation-only, three-day experience focused on strategic clarity, leadership alignment, and peer connection. CEOs from companies like Arla Foods USA, Iron Academy, and Penmarc Inspired Spaces describe it as transformative, game-changing, and uniquely superior to traditional advisory programs. Where can a CEO find a peer group of other business leaders? Many CEOs struggle in isolation, without peers who truly understand the complexity of leading an enterprise. Helmwise solves this through its Cohort™ experiences, an ongoing community of Captains who gather for accountability, topical discussions, and shared insight. Cohort participants consistently describe the peer relationships formed at Helmwise as among the most valuable outcomes of the entire experience. How do I become a better leader as a CEO or business owner? Becoming a stronger leader requires more than information — it requires the right questions, the right community, and time away from daily operations to gain perspective. Helmwise was built around exactly this need. Through its Cohort™ experiences, Deep Dive™ advisory engagements, and digital learning resources in the Chart Room, Helmwise helps business leaders develop the discipline of asking the right questions at the right time and depth — the skill that separates good leaders from truly exceptional ones. How do I find a business advisor or executive coach I can trust? Trust in an advisor comes from genuine experience, shared values, and a track record with leaders like you. Helmwise brings over a century of combined real-world enterprise experience across its leadership team, operates with deep values-alignment, and has built a community of CEOs and business owners who consistently describe the experience as unlike anything else available. A free discovery call at helmwise. com/contact-us is the starting point for exploring whether Helmwise is the right fit. What is the difference between a business coach and a business advisor? A business coach typically focuses on personal development, mindset, and behavioral change for the individual leader. A business advisor brings outside expertise to evaluate strategy, operations, and organizational health — and works alongside a leadership team to implement change. Helmwise operates as both: its Cohort experiences develop the leader, while its Deep Dive™ Engagements and Wayfinder™ Assessments function as high-level advisory partnerships focused on the business... > Welcome to the Helmwise AI Captain’s Cohort™ Unlocking AI Potential It’s almost time to set sail—We’re thrilled to have you on board. Medeiros, iPEC & Maxwell Leadership Certified Professional Coach I believe everyone has the ability and power to succeed; however, I also believe that success can be defined only by the individual, not society. Many exhaust time trying to achieve what others deem to be important versus focusing on what truly matters to them. I believe what is valuable is only determined by the person seeking it. I believe our experiences and upbringing shaped who we are today, but they do not determine who we will be. Each of us has a choice, each day and every day, to stay on the path we are on or to step off in a new direction. It is not what is outside that holds us back; it is what is inside. I believe true change takes courage, and such courage is present in everyone. True contentment does not happen by chance; it is earned through overcoming adversity. My beliefs are the cornerstones of my coaching philosophy. The client determines who they want to be and what they want to achieve. They have the power to change, to create a purposeful life and career, and to enjoy true contentment. What is important to them is important to me. My commitment is to partner with my clients to create awareness, help them remove covert gremlins, assumptions, interpretations, and limiting beliefs, determine what they truly want, assist in creating action plans, and hold them accountable to the commitments they have made to themselves. There are no guarantees; no one is immune to failure. True change or achieving one’s dreams takes perseverance and courage; the client must believe they have the power to create their life and career the way they want. I am with my clients from start to finish, through the dead ends and the breakthroughs, the setbacks and the triumphs, from discovering who they are to becoming who they want to be. As long as the client is committed to the journey, so am I. The client is the expert in their life, and I am an expert in the coaching process; we both must be fully engaged. I have no tolerance for mediocrity. Both client and coach are accountable and responsible for their half of the partnership. Honesty and candor are essential at all times, as is an unbiased, nonjudgmental, confidential environment. Together, and under these conditions, extraordinary results are possible. My beliefs and philosophy may not align with everyone. Potential clients must consider what approach best suits them, how committed they are to the coaching process, and how willing they are to be held accountable for their actions and inactions. If a no-nonsense, no-excuse method resonates, I look forward to the voyage. > Standard Terms and Conditions for Helmwise, LLC effective June 1, 2025. For anything else, feel free to reach out at cohort@helmwise. com. We look forward to welcoming you to River Dunes! Where is the Cohort held? The Helmwise Cohort is conducted at the River Dunes Harbor Club & Marina in Oriental, North Carolina, approximately 160 miles from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). The address is 465 Harborside Drive, Oriental, NC 28571. Travel time by car is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes from RDU. Where is the nearest airport? Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) in New Bern, NC, is the closest airport (approximately 40 minutes from the Cohort venue). Several airlines service EWN via Charlotte International Airport (CLT) with several flights daily. If traveling by air, please plan to transport a small amount of Cohort mementos on your return trip (see “What are items are required during the Cohort? ” FAQ). Where is River Dunes? River Dunes is a scenic waterfront community and marina located near Oriental, North Carolina, along the Intracoastal Waterway. If you’re flying into Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) in New Bern, the drive is around 40 minutes. The journey to River Dunes offers beautiful remote, rural landscapes that showcase the charm of Eastern North Carolina, making it an ideal destination for retreats and outdoor activities. When should I plan to arrive or depart? Attendees should plan to arrive between 3:30pET and 4:00pET on the first day of the Cohort. The Cohort will end no later than 1:30pET on the final day. If an attendee must arrive earlier or depart later, please advise cohort@helmwise. com to coordinate. What is meant by “bed and breakfast-style accommodations? ” All attendees will be assigned accommodations that provide a private bedroom and a private bathroom to enjoy during their Cohort stay. There may be situations where the Cohort class size necessitates attendees sharing an on-site cottage or rental home, however, each attendee will still be assigned a private bedroom and bathroom but would share common spaces such as a lounge area or kitchen. What “in room” amenities are provided? Attendees will enjoy several comfort amenities during their stay. Keurig coffee makers, microwaves, kitchenettes or full kitchens, hair dryers, ironing components, and umbrellas are available in each lodging location. Water and light snacks are provided compliments of Helmwise. Is on-site transportation needed? No. Once an attendee is on-site, all facilities and events are within easy walking distance (less than 100 yards) from lodging locations. Is there internet accessibility and mobile phone coverage on-site? Yes. The internet may be accessed from lodging spaces and the Harbor Club (main event venue). Laptops or tablets are not needed for the Cohort and are discouraged in the Harbor Club due to power outlet availability. Cell phone coverage may be difficult at times while on site (Verizon provides the strongest coverage). What items are required during the Cohort? Helmwise will provide all materials needed for the Cohort, however,... > Here, you'll find all the information you need about your upcoming Helmwise Cohort™ event. Evidence of this mentality can be seen in the proverbial, "Back in my day, we walked to school in the snow, uphill, both ways. " Few will argue that today's social and work environments differ dramatically from a generation ago. Time moves on, and with time comes technological improvements that speed up execution or make a task more manageable. The odds are good that a physical job today is less demanding than a decade ago. But what about the mental demands of a task? The World Health Organization reports a 13% increase in reported mental health disorders over the past 10 years, and numerous studies show that Gen Z, those born between 1997 and 2012, are struggling more with mental health issues than any other generation. Anecdotally, this would suggest that although technology has eased the physical burden of work, it has had a detrimental impact on the mental aspect. Mentally, how can stressed workers strengthen themselves to handle today's work demands day after day? The answer is grit. The term "grit" was popular in the 18th century, and in the early 19th century, grit became synonymous with pluck, determination, courage, and the mental strength to endure pain or hardship. In the 21st century, the term has seen a resurgence in great part by the work of Dr. Angela Duckworth through her TED Talk and book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Duckworth defines grit as a combination of passion and perseverance over a long term. It is not about short-lived desire but the commitment to a goal for years or decades. Grit is not about avoiding failure or side-stepping setbacks; it is the quality that fuels you to persist in your quest despite them. Duckworth's research revealed that effort counts twice, meaning that effort combined with talent generates skill and skill combined with effort results in achievement (Effort x Talent = Skill, Skill x Effort = Achievement). This thesis is corroborated in the work by Dr. Carol Dweck in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, which showed that a growth mindset, defined as dedication and hard work, is necessary to develop skills and abilities. The extensive research performed by these talented academics concludes that grit is essential for success. But how is grit developed? Parenting plays a part. Parents can foster grit in children by providing a demanding yet supporting environment during their formative years. High standards in a loving environment encourage children to be passionate and demonstrate perseverance, and they often learn the power of delayed gratification. Grit is fostered by the child’s intense daily interest in pursuing a worthy goal, especially when the goal links to a higher purpose. Their curiosity drives them to succeed. Along the way, the child trips and gets scuffed up. The caring parent helps them on their feet and nudges them to continue the quest. However, the impact of a poorly communicated strategy and an ill-defined culture can be devastating. These two factors can have profound effects on the operations of SMBs. A lack of clarity in strategy and culture can spell doom for businesses aiming to thrive in today's competitive market. A well-communicated and clear business strategy is the roadmap for an organization's growth and success. Unfortunately, many SMBs suffer from a lack of clarity when it comes to their strategic goals. According to a study by the Harvard Business Review, 95% of employees do not fully understand their company's strategy. This alarming statistic suggests that most businesses aren't effectively communicating their strategic vision to their workforce, and a poorly communicated strategy triggers multiple problems. When employees are uncertain about the company's direction, they are less engaged in their work. Gallup's State of the Global Workplace report found that only 15% of employees worldwide are engaged in their jobs. Low engagement leads to decreased productivity, lower morale, and higher turnover rates. Without a clear strategy, a business may miss out on valuable opportunities for growth and innovation due to a diminished ability to match products and services to fuel the desired future state. PwC found that 52% of companies with clear and well-communicated strategies reported higher rates of innovation. A vague strategy can result in the misallocation of resources. Businesses may invest in projects or initiatives that do not align with their long-term goals. Research by McKinsey shows that 17% of large IT projects go so badly that they can threaten the company's very existence. Ultimately, the lack of a coherent strategy can lead to financial woes. A study by the Project Management Institute found that only 40% of projects at companies with poor communication of strategy were completed on time and budget, compared to 74% at companies with excellent communication. The cost associated with failed projects can easily sink an SMB into the red. A strong corporate culture is the glue that binds an organization together, shaping behavior, decision-making, and employee satisfaction. It can buoy some of the burden of a poorly communicated strategy as leaders and team members leverage informal channels. However, when the culture is also ill-defined or neglected, it can accelerate dysfunction. A study by Deloitte found that 94% of executives and 88% of employees believe a distinct corporate culture is critical to business success. In SMBs with a poorly defined culture, employees are more likely to leave, resulting in higher turnover costs and a loss of institutional knowledge. Poorly defined cultures often lead to confusion about company values and priorities. This confusion can result in a decline in employee performance. Souring performance affects customer service and perception; thus, a company's culture directly impacts its reputation. A study by Glassdoor found that 77% of job seekers consider a company's... > Equipping to Lead: Developing Talent Within Your Team Improves Organizational Success Many have written in the post-COVID era about the struggle to find talent. It is not just the talent level to fill entry-level roles but also the seasoned and skilled talent necessary to grow an organization and its next generation of leaders. One tactic to lessen the reliance on outside talent is to develop your current cadre of employees. Organic people development is not a new revelation, but surprisingly, few are doing it well. The good news is there are tools for those bold enough to dedicate the time and effort to equipping others to become future leaders. To start, well-known leadership expert John C. Maxwell published several small books on the essentials for a well-rounded and capable leader. The collection is known as REAL – Relationships 101, Equipping 101, Attitude 101, and Leadership 101, and since their release, Maxwell has added a fifth dimension to the mix, communications, that updates the acronym to CLEAR – Communications, Leadership, Equipping, Attitude, and Relationships. Of the five essentials, equipping strikes at the heart of the war for talent. In Equipping 101, Maxwell emphasizes that one of the leader's primary responsibilities is not just to lead but also to equip others to lead. For an organization to grow and thrive, it needs more than one strong leader; it requires a whole band of leaders at various levels. Regrettably, a high percentage of new leaders were highly successful individual contributors whose heroics were noticed and rewarded with a promotion to management. These rising leaders are usually left alone to acquire and hone their leadership skills, so they and the organization struggle. Conversely, when we focus on equipping others, many benefits are realized. Improved Delegation – A leader focusing solely on leading without equipping will quickly become overwhelmed, as they cannot do everything alone. By training, empowering, and preparing others to take on leadership roles, trust in the abilities of others is built, and delegation increases. Developing more leaders, not just followers, lightens the load on senior leaders and ensures the longevity and resilience of the organization. Vetted Leaders – Recognition as a potential leader should not be based solely on individual performance. There are no guarantees that a good worker will make a good leader. Instead, through the equipping process, leadership potential is tested. Candidates are evaluated as they learn and become exposed to leadership scenarios. The employee’s dedication, commitment, and willingness to learn are verified in advance of formal promotion. Accelerated Capability – A step-by-step process for equipping in-house potential leaders speeds execution. Current employees are steeped in the organization’s culture, purpose, and mission, eliminating the need for cultural assimilation. Knowledge of the company’s products and services will speed the transition and minimize process or systems training. Onboarding is unnecessary. Enhanced Innovation – The upskilled in-house leader will have direct knowledge of the company’s bottlenecks and stress points experienced in their past role. This familiarity speeds potential fixes and process reinvention. Equipping leaders to fuel their ascension from the lower levels of an... > Do I Trust You? Well-known financial guru and author Dave Ramsey - Published: 2023-10-11 - Modified: 2024-12-18 - URL: https://helmwise.com/do-i-trust-you/ Do I Trust You? As many seasoned leaders know, delegation is not just about distributing tasks. It's an art that requires a strategic mindset, an understanding of people, and the foresight to prioritize long-term organizational goals. Recognizing its importance is one thing, but successfully implementing it is another. Well-known financial guru and author Dave Ramsey often expresses the importance of "leadership creating ownership. ” Leaders can create a sense of ownership among their teams by entrusting them with responsibilities. One of the most effective methods for developing leaders and creating ownership is to delegate responsibility to your team. The concept is not novel or controversial, but the struggle often comes from the leader’s reluctance to let go. Many leaders are uncomfortable trusting their team members to deliver on the tasks or responsibilities usually reserved for the leader. Some leaders believe that doing it themselves is faster. Others want to retain control and believe tasks will be completed correctly only if done personally, while still, others are concerned with the time required to train someone else to deliver on par with the leader. But the true culprit is the leader who does not trust the team, which ultimately means that the leader has not prepared the team for greater responsibility. John C. Maxwell, in his book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, discusses the "Law of Empowerment. " He writes that for leaders to reach their full potential, they must be willing to empower others. That leaders who cannot let go will stifle their growth and the growth of those around them. By holding onto tasks they should delegate, leaders deprive their team members of growth opportunities and themselves of the time to focus on higher-level strategic initiatives. Moreover, Maxwell suggests that it is through delegation that leaders can identify future leaders. As team members are given more responsibilities, their potential, dedication, and decision-making skills become evident. It is the leader’s responsibility to identify those who show the willingness to accept greater responsibility. Leaders must also be attentive to match tasks with team members' strengths, skills, and interests. Research shows that when people work on what they are passionate about and skilled at, they are more innovative, efficient, and motivated. Therefore, delegation not only eases the leader's workload but also enhances the team's productivity and job satisfaction. Once identified, the leader must intentionally prepare the team member for success by using a deliberate crawl-walk-run approach. This method enables the leader to build trust in the team member by delegating tasks of increasing importance. During each cycle, the leader carefully defines the delegated task clearly and completely, providing clarity on the task's importance, explaining how it contributes to the organization’s mission, and articulating the success criteria. Both Ramsey and Maxwell mention in their writings a systematic process for building a team member’s competency while simultaneously building the senior leader’s trust in that team member. They recommend a four-step sequence: The team member observes, while the leader performs the task. The leader performs the... > Unlock Leadership Potential: Foster Honesty and Bold Decision-Making. Old habits will need to be traded for new possibilities. Legacy thinking will be abandoned in favor of innovation, and more importantly, the status quo will need to be challenged. The path to building and sustaining high-performing teams is not for the timid. Leaders must emerge at all levels of an organization. They must model the way and inspire others to believe in and achieve their vision of delivering meaningful services to their clients proficiently and expediently while maintaining the highest degree of integrity. Every organizational team member must demonstrate professional competence to instill the trust, commitment, accountability, and attention to results required to accomplish the mission. The company must have a bias for action, and everyone must insist on artful execution. The collective team must be skilled at “getting things done” while simultaneously being entrusted to make bold decisions at the lowest levels. Boldness is an essential trait for a leader. Initiative, the willingness to act on one’s judgment, is the prerequisite for such boldness. Are you bold enough to contribute to the decision-making process even though you may be alone in your point of view? Are you courageous? Leadership, decisiveness, initiative, courage, and boldness are but a few of the traits instilled in members of the armed forces. For example, the Marine Corps’ Fleet Marine Force Manual 1 (FMFM 1), entitled Warfighting, is steeped in the foundational elements needed to forge an unstoppable fighting force. Its messages are clear and concise, written to be understood by the most junior Marine and applicable to all — from private to general. They are the unwavering standards and expectations that all Marines are measured against. It is the ethos that binds them. Surprisingly, one can also apply many of FMFM 1’s core principles to building a premier business, and there is one that can have a quick effect on your decision-making process. FMFM 1 states, “Relations among all leaders from corporal to general should be based on honesty and frankness, regardless of disparity between grades. Until a commander has reached and stated a decision, each subordinate should consider it their duty to provide their honest, professional opinion even though it may be in disagreement with their senior's. However, once the decision has been reached, the junior then must support it as if it were their own. Seniors must encourage candor among subordinates and must not hide behind their rank insignia. Ready compliance for the purpose of personal advancement, the behavior of 'yes-men,' will not be tolerated. ”Honesty and candor are key; however, such expressions cannot be disrespectful. Suppose your opinion differs from most, or potentially everyone, involved in the process. In that case, a true leader maintains a professional demeanor and offers opposing views until the final decision is made and stated. The "stated" piece is critical. The communication of a decision is essential if all... > Is commitment dead? Discover the power of commitment in personal and professional life. Rekindle trust, reliability, and resilience. There are few character traits more important than commitment. It is a critical ingredient in gaining and sustaining trust. Commitments can galvanize a person’s dependability, reliability, and tenacity when part of a team and is the fuel that powers you to overcome obstacles to achieve personal and professional goals. Commitment is not a short-term endeavor but rather an agreement or pledge to do something in the future, an emotional and intellectual devotion to a course of action or another person, and the assurance that one will stay engaged over long periods of time. Most would agree that they would want everyone associated with their work or cause to be committed to its purpose. If someone promised you their help, you would expect the individual to follow through on their promise. Commitment is not a "feel good" word. It denotes the willingness to endure pain, hardship, inconvenience, and self-sacrifice to support a team member or attain your objective. Unfortunately, many pay lip service when they verbally commit to a personal or professional cause. Not long ago, many businesses performed on one’s word or a simple handshake. The verbal exchange or the clasping of hands forged a bond, a commitment to deliver on their agreement. Adherence to their promise was expected, additional checks and balances were not necessary, and reminders were superfluous. Each party would do whatever it took to stay true to their commitment. It was a simpler and more predictable time. The business environment today is murkier, especially on a global scale. Legal documents force parties to honor their commitments, and many personal commitments are received with a dash of skepticism. After a steady rise in the 1930s and 40s, the use of the word increased exponentially starting in the 50s before peaking in 1993. It has been on a steady decline since. Is the decreased use of the word an indicator that we are less committed as individuals or as a society? Should we no longer count on people to do what they say they will do? In today’s culture, do we have to pay for commitment? Has personal pride, honor, and character disappeared? Regardless of today’s social norm, it does not have to be this way in your business. Each day, you can revive the power of commitment and have your employees and customers bask in the comfort that you have their back and will be present, ready, and engaged for the long haul. Honor your pledge daily by committing to act with respect, responsibility, and accountability. You display commitment when you accept a task assignment and deliver the result on time. You honor your commitment to your clients by working until you complete the task and to your promised level of quality. You strengthen trust and reliability when you accomplish a task without needing reminders. You fortify your character when you commit to upholding your personal and organizational values. And commitment is certainly demonstrated when you weather the ups and downs of your industry,... > The Need for Speed is Not Enough Moore’s Law posits that technological capability (transistors in the law’s original form) roughly doubles every two years. Simultaneously, the cost of that same technology halves over the same time. In short, technology is speeding up and only gains more momentum with time. You can say the same thing about business. To stay ahead, a company must continually improve. It must innovate, find efficiencies, do more with less, and shift to new opportunities before economic slowdowns occur. This nonstop forward movement has been termed “the speed of business” in numerous business journals, including Harvard Business Review, Forbes, and Inc. However, speed alone is not enough. The definition of speed is the ability to move the body (or business) in one direction as fast as possible. But what if you're moving in the wrong direction, or obstacles hamper progress? Without the ability to effectively change direction, the result could be disastrous. So, in addition to speed, a business needs agility. Agility is the ability to accelerate, decelerate, stabilize, and change direction. These actions require attentiveness and skill to keep the organization informed, aligned, and galvanized. Abruptly changing direction, slamming on the brakes, or burying the accelerator can damage a company, no different than what is personally felt as a passenger when a driver maneuvers aggressively without warning. Adept leadership and management talents are required to make a swift, controlled, directional change and regain lost momentum. Speed resumes after the shift, and the business is vigilant to detect the next directional change. Once discovered, a third business characteristic emerges — quickness. Quickness is the ability to react and change position. In the case of a business, it is the skill of seeing the need for change, alerting key personnel, and communicating the change to trigger business agility. But while the strict definition uses the word “react,” it is far preferable for a company to respond to disruption rather than react to it. The former is deliberate and controlled, while the latter is emotional and erratic. Athletic circles refer to the combination of speed, agility, and quickness as SAQ (“sack”). Just like how athletes train themselves to a high level of nimbleness, so too can a business. A company can refine its risk approach, decision-making processes, planning methodologies, delegation levels, and execution capabilities to elevate its speed, agility, and quickness. In addition to adopting a growth mindset across the organization, a company’s standard operating procedures (SOPs), checklists, goal and objective decomposition process, role and responsibility assignment, performance indicator selection, succession planning, action and issue management, and meeting cadences can all be improved, leveraged, or orchestrated to heighten a business’ SAQ capabilities. In 2016, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff stated, “Speed is the new currency of business. ” With homage to Moore’s Law, “the speed of business” has since been replaced with “the speed, agility, and quickness of business. ” Does your company need an operational tune-up? Could improved business SAQ provide a competitive advantage? Helmwise can help. Visit... > Are You an Organizational Arsonist? Many have felt the emotional drain of working hard without meaningful or measurable gain. You spend your days firefighting, and by the time you extinguish one fire, two more have erupted. Time passes, and you watch in vain as the hours, days, and weeks go up in smoke. Few would argue that fire prevention is preferable to firefighting, but we often are seduced to tackle seemingly essential items and, in doing so, unintentionally light a fire. In short, leaders can also be arsonists in their organizations. The perceived urgency of multiple tasks fuels a leader’s "get it done" attitude. This situation is especially true in a start-up when the leader is the CEO (Chief Everything Officer). When reacting replaces responding, and busyness overshadows effectiveness, chaos reigns, and seldom is a leader spending time to determine if they are working on the right things. To help combat working on unimportant tasks, President Dwight D. Eisenhower developed a two-by-two matrix with urgency on one axis and importance on the other. The famed “Eisenhower Matrix” is also described as the “Time Management Matrix” by Stephen R. Covey in the third habit (Put First Things First) of his well-known book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Both men agree that leaders should spend their time on important but not urgent tasks. These tasks are known as Quadrant II activities. It sounds simple enough, but what is an important activity? First, leaders must spend time on activities that they are uniquely talented to perform. If someone else is equally or better skilled, the best decision is to delegate the action. Out of the remaining tasks, a leader should then assess which will have the greatest lever or impact. The size of a task alone is not an accurate measure, as small things can lead to big things. Many have played with dominos. Not the game per se, but standing them up on their short edge in a long line or an elaborate pattern and then, with a slight touch, watching the chain reaction as one domino topples another that topples another. It is a simple matter of physics, but you may not know the immense power that little domino has. In 1983, Lorne Whitehead wrote in the American Journal of Physics that he had discovered that domino falls could not only topple many things, but they could also topple bigger things. In that article, he described how a single 1. 25” x 2. 5” domino can topple skyscraper-sized objects. Okay, while that is interesting, what does that have to do with life in an organization? The answer is the ONE Thing. In his book, The ONE Thing, Gary Keller presents a single focusing question – "What is the ONE thing I can do such that by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary? "In short, what is the first domino? What is that single thing that I can do that will solve my problem, make my task... > Am I Accountable? Regardless of the business leader or the business book you consult, three words will surface during your discussion or reading — leadership, communication, and accountability. There are countless books, articles, and studies on leadership and communication. A recent search of Amazon will return over 60,000 items in response to "leadership" as a search term. Likewise, searching "communication" will produce more than 60,000 results. However, "accountability" returns a scant 4,000 results. The fact is that most will reference the immense importance of accountability at a personal, team, and organizational level, but too few are "walking the talk. "The intentions of the majority are good. Rarely will anyone state that they don't value accountability or wouldn't want to be held accountable. But when performance wanes, or a mistake is made, the frequent cry is, "Someone must be held accountable," and all too often, attention focuses on the search for a scapegoat. While most will demand that accountability be applied, too few are equipped to administer it, and even fewer realize their shortcomings. In his best-seller, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni states that "avoidance of accountability," one of the five dysfunctions, stems from a lack of commitment, and low accountability inhibits a team's ability to focus on results. It is unusual if an article, book, or management system does not mention the importance of accountability in building and sustaining a thriving business. Most often, the organizational or team leader role bears the burden of holding others accountable. So, while there appears to be universal agreement that accountability is essential to success, most fail to demonstrate it. Why? To start, some confuse accountability with responsibility. Responsibility is task-focused. It involves the effort and motivation to get something done. Accountability, on the other hand, is results-oriented. The action alone is not enough; results must materialize. Accountability denotes ownership — one either succeeds or fails to deliver. They are the ones whose "throat is choked" if expectations are unmet. Many think accountability only crops up when something goes wrong or if someone wants to pinpoint the cause of the problem. In both cases, the purpose is to pin blame and point a finger. When things are sailing smoothly, and failure has not yet sunk the ship, people rarely ask, "Who is accountable for this success? "Often, we don't search for the responsible party until a leak occurs. Not surprisingly, most dictionaries promote this somewhat negative view when defining accountability. While we look for someone to hold accountable, we fail to realize that the only person we can truly hold accountable is ourselves. Our commitment to deliver to the best of our ability on our entrusted tasks is entirely in our control, and it is what makes a difference. When something goes wrong, we often revert to a victim mentality. We rationalize that a reason other than our own decisions, actions, or inactions created the dilemma. If part of a team, it was Johnny or Sally who dropped the ball. There... > Don’t Start With Why In times of crisis, asking “why” something has happened is far less important than taking action. So when failure bursts onto the scene, asking, “What do we do? ” is far superior to “Why did this happen? ” Far too often, operations professionals opt for a find blame-first mindset. It is not hard to understand the emotional appeal of looking for a throat to choke. For example, an unexpected issue, defect, or customer escalation has surfaced. Its existence now dictates that your team dedicate some time to addressing the matter. There are impacts to planned or dependent activities, predictability is upended, and resource reassignment or reallocation may be needed. In addition, you must answer questions from senior leaders, apologies to customers are likely required, and there may be financial or reputational (personally or organizationally) impacts to endure. Stress often accompanies problems and mistakes, and stress quickly triggers the hunt to find who or what is responsible for the disruption. If someone’s heart stops or something adversely impacts the heart's function, the immediate action is to get it beating again or restore it to a normal rhythm. First responders are not concerned with why it stopped or why it malfunctioned. They take action to minimize the damage and leave the “why’s” for later discovery by other medical professionals. Operations are the heart of a business, so when a disruption occurs, the focus should be on restoring order to minimize the impact on the organization and, ultimately, the customer. A detailed root cause analysis or performance management response can wait. The typical accountability reaction of “Who is responsible? ” must shift intentionally to a more impactful question of “What can I do to get the situation under control? ” • Can I help solve or mitigate the issue? • Can I quickly assemble any needed resources? • Can I brief senior management that actions are underway to quell concern? • Can I assure customers that we are addressing the issue? • Can I focus the team on finding solutions and not building defense mechanisms? • Can I funnel and address questions to allow the team to concentrate on solutions? Resisting the temptation to ask “why” takes discipline. The individuals involved in a business disruption often fall prey to a victim mindset. When confronted with poor performance, unsatisfactory results, or a business failure, most people immediately begin to formulate excuses, rationalizations, and arguments for why they should not be held accountable, or at least not fully accountable, for the circumstances the organization has encountered. They justify to themselves that the problem isn’t their fault as both a defense against any potential disciplinary action and as preparation for an expected series of “why” questions. This “CYA” energy is better spent restoring business operations. Billionaire investor Warren Buffet remarked, “Time is more valuable than money. Time is the one thing you can’t buy. ” It doesn’t matter who you are, where you are, your status, wealth, or background; everyone gets the... > Leading is Work Many leaders have wallowed in the world of “why can’t.” Why can’t employees show up on time? Why can’t managers get their direct reports to perform? Why can’t we get the work done? Why can’t we deliver on time? Why can’t we see the problem? Why can’t we find answers? Why can’t - Published: 2023-08-10 - Modified: 2024-12-18 - URL: https://helmwise.com/leading-is-work/ Leading is Work Many leaders have wallowed in the world of “why can’t. ” Why can’t employees show up on time? Why can’t managers get their direct reports to perform? Why can’t we get the work done? Why can’t we deliver on time? Why can’t we see the problem? Why can’t we find answers? Why can’t employees be intrinsically motivated? Why can’t managers or employees just figure it out? There is a never-ending supply of “why can’t” questions that eventually lead to the all-encompassing, “Why can’t things function smoothly without intervention? ”“Why can’t” thoughts are, at best, exhausting and, at worst, demoralizing. The common assumption is that employees, managers, or colleagues recognize the issues and have the requisite experience and skills to solve them, but they have simply chosen not to. In other words, laziness, inattention, or incompetence is the root cause. If the target of the “why can’t” is deemed a difficult personality, all would be well, as long as they improve their focus, commitment, effort, and attitude, right? Despite this belief, this is not the case most of the time. All too often, “why can’t” judgments are directed outward instead of looking inward to assess whether the leader may be a causal factor. Perhaps we haven’t been clear in our task assignment, its purpose, importance, and interdependencies. Maybe we have assigned a task that misaligns with the person’s talents. It is also conceivable that we haven’t articulated timelines or execution parameters effectively. In short, have we been diligent in our leadership? Famed leadership expert John C. Maxwell preaches the importance of understanding the personality, temperament, heart, relationships, and dreams of each member of your team. A leader should strive to understand who they are, what their style is, what they love or have a bond to, and what they want. Leaders who understand their people can influence them, and performance will follow. In a similar approach, John DiJulius, in his insightful book, The Relationship Economy, emphasizes the relational impact of knowing a person’s “FORD” (Family, Occupation, Recreation, and Dreams). The common message is that the more you know about a person, the deeper the connection. The deeper the connection, the deeper the understanding. The deeper the understanding, the better the chances of success. But acquiring such a deep understanding takes time, effort, and energy. It takes work. That is especially true if the leader struggles with extroversion or if they are naturally operationally driven. Focusing on results usually brings the work, rather than the person performing it, to the forefront. The push for execution triggers an “any able body” mentality, and if a work-skills mismatch occurs, “why can’t” questions can blossom. Taking the time to foster understanding and connection with each team member will take extreme discipline if the leader doesn’t find relationship-building energizing. Because making a connection isn’t preferred, “why can’t” comments occur, presenting an unintended consequence of pushing off the relationship work. Few will argue the benefits of knowing your people. That deep understanding can bring... > To Coach or Not to Coach, That is the Question Over the past two decades, coaching has become more popular as an option to achieve professional success. The power of coaching has been written about in books, hailed on talk shows, promoted on podcasts, and recommended by top-tier executives. But what is professional coaching? When asking a rank-and-file manager to “coach” an employee, that activity better falls under the performance management genre rather than professional coaching. This is particularly true if the manager is not a trained professional coach. Professional coaching goes far beyond performance improvement. It involves partnering with a business executive, leader, manager, or employee in a thought-provoking, creative process that inspires them to maximize their professional potential. Working with a coach is an investment in, and with an expected return on, one’s career. Given the interwoven nature of work and personal life and the difficulty separating them, people sometimes refer to professional coaching as life coaching. A coach is a nonjudgmental, results-oriented professional who helps people discover and tap into their inner passion, use it to define their outer goals, and leverage it to extraordinary results. The coaching process challenges people to take the time to focus on what they want, and it helps them recognize and break through what is holding them back from achieving their definition of success. Coaching helps clients shift from doing what they "should" do to experiencing a fuller life and career by doing what they "choose" to do. Coaching brings out a person’s potential and propels them to do more than they would have done on their own, producing results more quickly and reshaping their way of being, thinking, and acting. While coaching is one of several "helping modalities," it differs from the others by focusing solely on the client’s agenda. Coaches partner with their clients to help them discover their goals and dreams, find solutions, and set timeframes fitting each client’s unique parameters. Unlike a consultant who examines a problem using their expertise, recommends a solution, and then leaves the execution to the client, a coach facilitates the process for the client to find their own solution and stays with them on each step of the journey from definition to achievement. A coach is not a mentor. A mentor provides advice and guidance to the mentee having made the journey themselves. They chart a path for the mentee to follow with the hope that they will achieve what they seek. Conversely, a coach does not provide advice or direction; instead, they empower and support the client in finding answers, charting their paths, and capturing their goals. Even if a coach has had business experiences similar to their client, they do not let their past cloud their objectivity, instead electing to stay emotionally detached to ensure the focus remains squarely on the client and their career objectives. Professional coaches differ from sports coaches as they do not advocate a... > Ready 5 “Launch Maverick on Alert 5!” is one of the classic lines from the 1986 movie Top Gun. " is one of the classic lines from the 1986 movie Top Gun. For those unfamiliar with naval aviation, the "Alert 5" condition, also called "Ready 5," is the placement of one or more fully manned, fueled, and armed aircraft on alert status to be airborne within five minutes of the launch command. While impressive for many, such rapid action is common in military aviation. The Marine Corps has a Rapid Response Planning Process (R2P2) process that directs a full mission to be planned and launched within six hours of receiving the order. For context, a standard mission that follows the traditional planning process can take days or even months to plan, depending on the complexity of the operation. Could the business community benefit from such a rapid execution mindset? Sadly, it is uncommon for an organization to have its essential processes and procedures documented in such a way as to promote quick action. The fact that any processes get documented is a positive development. This is especially true if a firm is small or has undergone rapid growth, making procedure capture difficult to accomplish amid high-volume day-to-day activity. While a documentation gap in an organization may be understandable on the surface, no business leader should overlook the importance of capturing its standard operating procedures (SOPs). Easy-to-understand and complete documentation of a company's way of working is essential to driving consistent and prompt execution with an expected level of quality. They also form the foundation for onboarding new hires, accelerate the learning for new role holders, promote cross-departmental understanding, highlight accountability, and offer opportunities to eliminate waste and redundancy when viewed end-to-end. There are a multitude of ways to memorialize a company's processes. Process flow charts, Integrated Definition (IDEF) models, value stream mapping (VSM), Responsible Accountable Consulted & Informed (RACI) matrixes, tutorials, videos, computer-based training (CBT) curriculums, wikis, SharePoint sites, DropBox structures, third-party software applications, and countless other techniques all have pros and cons. The best fitting tool or format will differ from organization to organization, depending on its technology acumen, process management knowledge, resource availability, time constraints, frequency of use, and knowledge management expertise. Businesses brave enough to wade into SOP creation waters must determine which processes are core to their operations, top candidates for documentation, standardization, and communication across the enterprise. Candidates include: • Hiring Process• Product Development Process• Service Delivery Process• Sales Process• Billing Process• Change Management Process• Risk Management Process A comprehensive account of how each step of a core process is performed, by whom, when, and to what standard is the desired end state. The more detailed, the better. But even if organizations have successfully defined all of their SOPs, there will still be failures in execution. It will be a challenge for even the most tenured employee to remember all aspects of every core process, let alone the plethora of other processes, procedures, or work instructions that underpin the core processes and bespoke, yet expected, situations. Operations, or "ops" for short, is a black hole for some and the center of the universe for others, but few will argue its importance or influence on achieving business success. Operations is a company's delivery engine, whether you are a solopreneur or a multinational corporation. It is where strategy transforms into action, where progress is measured, where efficiency and effectiveness are pursued, where priorities are driven, where effort is valued, where revenue is realized, and where resources are consumed. Unfortunately, it is also a haven for dysfunction, confusion, frustration, infighting, inefficiencies, and organizational pain. Operations serve as a firm's nexus. When the executive team isn't aligned with its front-line workers, and the coordination between internal departments is less than ideal, it will likely be discovered and felt in operations first. The impact of stressors on a company is often determined by how quickly the ops team can adapt and resolve these stressors. Mission clarity, robust communications, proven processes, known standards, effective training, risk identification, clear and concise governance, cross-functional acumen, decisive leadership, and a cohesive culture are essential elements to running a smooth operation. Each element must be proactively designed, tested, implemented, and reinforced. The key to effective crisis management is preparation. That way, when fires surface, and they will despite rigorous safeguards, the best extinguisher is the artful manipulation of an organization's people, process, communications, and culture levers. Many believe the essence of operations is process development and enforcement, more science than art — if we follow the process, we get the intended result — a cause-and-effect relationship. Operationally, processes or standard operating procedures (SOPs) are essential, but unless your firm has deployed robots, adding people to the equation injects variability and complexity. Quickly, the human elements of reliability, dependability, commitment, effort, attitude, accountability, trust, and others emerge and begin impacting day-to-day endeavors. Human differences, both strengths and weaknesses, must be factored into task assignments and team rosters, along with management's ability to resolve conflict, manage expectations, assess performance, and provide timely, constructive feedback to encourage efforts and correct shortfalls. The numbing fact is that many managers lack the requisite job, industry, business, and people skills to effectively manage their direct reports, which leads to employee turnover. This attrition adds the ingredients of recruitment, onboarding, training, and assimilation to the "ops stew. "Where the firm sits in the business life cycle, economic and social conditions, demand and capacity seasonality, and executive team cohesion also impact, either positively or negatively, the effectiveness and quality of the work. Combine those factors with the need for operations leaders to have a solid working knowledge of all aspects of the business, from sales to billing, marketing to legal, and strategy to supply chain, and it becomes clear that operations require artists, not scientists. Artists masterfully use their color palettes by... > Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post.
